An Egyptian post office was opened in Suakin in 1867 and others followed in the next thirty years. Egyptian stamps were used. During the campaigns military mail was either franked with Egyptian stamps, written on Indian postal stationery or sent ‘O.A.S. No stamps Available.’ Sir Herbert Kitchener wished for something more appropriate and contemporary Egyptian stamps were overprinted ‘SOUDAN’ in French and Arabic.
